What is Palliative Care?

Palliative Care is the treatment, care and support for patients, young and elderly, who are facing life-limiting illness. It also entails much-needed support for their family and friends.  It is therefore also called “Supportive Care”. The aim of Palliative Care is to facilitate the best possible quality of life and assisting patients to live as actively as possible.   The focus is on managing physical, psychological, social and spiritual wellbeing and providing relief from pain and other distressing symptoms.

Palliative Care may be required at any stage of an illness. Having the need for Palliative Care does not necessarily mean that the patient is likely to die soon – some patients receive Palliative Care for years. Patients may also receive Palliative Care alongside their treatments, therapies and medicines aimed at controlling or curing their condition, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy.   Palliative Care also includes caring for people who are nearing the end of their life, and is sometimes referred to as End-of-life Care.

The Principles of Palliative Care

Palliative Care intends neither to hasten nor postpone death.

The focus is on the individual and not their illness or condition.

An important approach is that, despite the therapies and medicines that have already been administered, there is always something that can be done to improve the quality of the life remaining to the patient.

What is the difference between Palliative Care & Hospice Care?

Palliative Care and Hospice Care both provide comfort for persons with life-limiting illnesses, however Palliative Care can begin at diagnosis stage and can coincide and support the treatment phase.

Hospice Care starts mostly when treatment is discontinued and it becomes clear that the patient will not overcome the illness.

Conditions that require Palliative Care

Renal failure

Cancer

COPD

MND or ALS

Dementia

Parkinson’s Disease

Advanced liver disease
